The oldest existing Spanish settlement in Costa Rica, Cartago was founded by Spanish conquistador Juan Vásquez de Coronado in 1563. The city is a culturally interesting place to study Spanish and is an important stop for pilgrims, its church containing a statue of the Black Madonna, "La Negrita", who was meant to have possessed healing powers.
